Tire Grip

  • Grip is greatly reduced on wet or icy roads; adapt speed and driving style.
  • Install M+S radial tires in winter.
  • Below 1/8" (3 mm) tread depth, grip decreases rapidly on wet roads.

Hydroplaning

  • Can occur even at low speeds with new tires, depending on water depth.
  • Reduce speed, avoid road grooves, and brake cautiously in rain.
  • Wider tires (225/70) are more susceptible than narrower ones.

Pressure & Temperature

  • Always check pressures with cold tires.
  • Pressure changes ~1.5 PSI per 18°F (10°C) temperature change.
  • After fast driving, pressure can rise up to 14.5 PSI. Never release air from warm tires.

Loaded Tire Pressures - PSI

Correct the tire pressures before loading the vehicle fully. Check pressures regularly (each refueling) including the spare.

Comfort Tire Pressures - PSI

For longer journeys with an unloaded or partially loaded vehicle, these lower pressures provide a smoother ride.

Tire Pressure Safety Checklist

When to Check

  • Every refueling stop, with cold tires
  • Before long trips or heavy loading
  • After significant temperature changes (season transitions)
  • Don't forget the spare tire

What to Avoid

  • Never release air from warm tires
  • Don't exceed 1.5 PSI difference between tires on the same axle
  • Don't ignore tread depth - replace at 1/8" (3 mm)
  • Don't mix tire types on the same axle

Winter Adjustments

  • Indoor temps (~68°F) vs outdoor (~32°F) = add 3 PSI (20 kPa)
  • Install M+S rated winter tires for cold/icy conditions
  • Check more frequently as temperatures fluctuate

Recommended Tools

  • Digital tire pressure gauge for accurate readings
  • Portable 12V air compressor for on-the-road adjustments
  • Tread depth gauge (don't rely on the penny test)

Tire information can also be obtained from any authorized Sprinter dealer.

Wheel Lug Nut Torque Specifications

Proper wheel bolt torque is critical for safety. Under-torquing causes wheels to loosen; over-torquing warps brake rotors and can snap studs.

Configuration Torque (ft·lbs) Notes
Single rear wheels (SRW) 133 ft·lbs Tighten in a star pattern across 2–3 passes
Dual rear wheels (DRW) 133 ft·lbs Tighten in a star pattern; check inner and outer wheels

Frequently Asked Questions

Pressures depend on tire size and axle load. For 195/70 R15 C tires, front axle pressures range from 47–65 PSI (3.2–4.5 bar). For 225/70 R15 C tires, front pressures range from 36–51 PSI (2.5–3.5 bar). Always check with cold tires and refer to the tables above.

Check all tire pressures (including the spare) every time you refuel, always with cold tires. The difference between tires on the same axle should not exceed 1.5 PSI (0.1 bar). Check more frequently during season changes.

Tire pressure changes by about 1.5 PSI (0.1 bar) for every 18°F (10°C) change in air temperature. After fast driving or hot weather, pressures can increase by up to 14.5 PSI (1.0 bar). Never release air from a warm tire.

Comfort pressures are lower settings for longer journeys with an unloaded or partially loaded vehicle. For example, 225/70 R15 C tires on a lightly loaded front axle can be set to 33–36 PSI (2.3–2.5 bar) instead of the full-load spec. Always switch back to loaded pressures before adding cargo.
