OM647 (2004–2006) Without filter change ~6.9 qt MB 229.5 5W-40
Engine Coolant
All models Total system fill ~12.7 qt MB 325.0 Blue silicate
Mix 50/50 with distilled water. Never mix coolant types; flush completely before switching.
Zerex G-48 meets MB 325.0 and is the closest match to the factory spec. Zerex G-05 (HOAT) is widely used by the T1N community and is compatible, but is technically a Ford/Chrysler specification, not the official Mercedes type.
Automatic Transmission (NAG1 / 722.6 / 5G-Tronic)
All models Service refill (pan + filter) ~5.3 qt MB 236.12
All models Full overhaul / dry fill ~9.0 qt MB 236.14
Dry fill varies with cooler type, line length, and auxiliary cooler presence. Always check level at operating temperature.
Rear Axle Differential
All models 8.5" ring gear (standard) ~2.0 qt GL-5 75W-90
Fill to the bottom of the fill hole. Confirm LSD compatibility if equipped with limited-slip differential.
Brake Fluid
All models System capacity (incl. ABS) ~1.0 qt DOT 4 MB 331.0
Replace every 2 years regardless of mileage. Brake fluid absorbs moisture which lowers boiling point. Bleed all four corners plus ABS module.
Fuel Tank
All models Main tank (nominal) ~26.4 gal ULSD Diesel
All models Reserve (light to empty) ~2.8 gal
Use Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD, 15 ppm max). See our Diesel Fuel 101 guide for details.
Power Steering
All models System capacity (approx.) ~1.1 qt MB 236.3 CHF-11S
Exact capacity varies by steering gear and hose routing. Use Pentosin CHF-11S or MB 236.3 equivalent. Bleed by turning lock-to-lock with engine off before starting.
Windshield Washer
All models Reservoir capacity ~1.6 gal All-season washer fluid

Drain & Fill Plug Torque Specifications

Always use a calibrated torque wrench when reinstalling drain plugs and fill plugs. Over-torquing can crack pans or strip threads; under-torquing causes leaks.

Fastener Torque (ft·lbs) Notes
Engine oil drain plug 18.4 ft·lbs Replace copper crush washer at each oil change
Oil filter housing cap 18.4 ft·lbs Lubricate O-ring with fresh oil before reinstalling
Transmission pan bolts (NAG1) 5.9 ft·lbs Tighten in a cross/star pattern. Do not overtighten; pan warps easily
Transmission fill tube bolt 5.9 ft·lbs Check for cracks in the fill tube O-ring
Rear differential fill plug 44.3 ft·lbs Fill to bottom of fill hole before reinstalling
Rear differential drain plug 44.3 ft·lbs Clean magnetic drain plug before reinstalling
Brake bleeder screws 7.4 ft·lbs Snug only; overtightening cracks caliper

Engine Oil Selection by Climate

Cold Climate

Below 32°F / frequent cold starts

0W-40 Synthetic

Better cold-flow protection

Moderate Climate

Most North American / European regions

5W-40 Synthetic

Best all-around choice

Hot Climate

Sustained temps above 95°F

5W-40 or 5W-50 Synthetic

Better thermal stability

All oils must meet MB 229.5 specification (or newer 229.51/229.52). Popular brands: MOTUL 8100 X-CESS, Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200, Shell Rotella T6.

Fluid Maintenance Tips

Use a Fluid Extractor

A vacuum oil extractor allows mess-free oil and ATF changes through the dipstick tube, with no need to crawl under the van or remove the drain plug.

Don't Mix Coolants

Flush thoroughly before switching types. Zerex G-48 (MB 325.0) is the factory-correct choice. Zerex G-05 is a popular community alternative. Mix 50/50 with distilled water only.

Transmission Service

Use MOTUL Multi ATF or MB 236.12+ fluid. Always change the filter and consider a new conductor plate above 150k miles. Check level at operating temp.

Use a Torque Wrench

Whether reinstalling a drain bolt or diff fill plug, a click-style torque wrench prevents cracked pans or stripped threads.

Bleed Power Steering

After filling, turn steering lock-to-lock with engine off several times to purge air. Top off with Pentosin CHF-11S. Start engine and repeat.

Keep a Maintenance Log

Record every fluid change, product used, mileage, and date. Essential for resale value and tracking service intervals on high-mileage T1Ns.

Recommended Service Intervals

Fluid Interval (miles) Time Notes
Engine Oil + Filter 5,000–7,500 mi 6 months Whichever comes first. Shorter interval for severe duty.
Coolant 60,000 mi 5 years Full flush and refill. Use MB 325.0 spec coolant (Zerex G-48 or G-05).
Transmission Fluid + Filter 40,000–60,000 mi - Pan drop service. Replace conductor plate if above 150k.
Differential Fluid 60,000 mi - Sooner if towing frequently or operating in extreme conditions.
Brake Fluid - 2 years Moisture absorption degrades performance regardless of mileage.
Power Steering Fluid 60,000 mi - Inspect for contamination or dark color at each oil change.
Fuel Filter 20,000–30,000 mi - Drain fuel-water separator at every oil change.

Intervals based on Mercedes-Benz recommendations and common T1N community practices. Adjust for severe conditions (towing, dusty environments, extreme temperatures).

Frequently Asked Questions

The OM612 (2002–2003) holds approximately 6.5 L (6.9 qt) with filter change. The OM647 (2004–2006) holds approximately 7.0 L (7.4 qt) with filter change. Always verify the level with the dipstick after filling. Do not rely solely on the capacity figure.

The T1N requires oil meeting Mercedes-Benz specification MB 229.5 (or newer). 5W-40 synthetic is the standard for most climates; use 0W-40 for cold regions. MOTUL 8100 X-CESS, Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200, and Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 are popular choices.

The factory spec is MB 325.0 (blue, silicate-based). Zerex G-48 meets this spec and is the closest match. Zerex G-05 (HOAT) is widely used by the T1N community and is compatible, though it's technically a Ford/Chrysler formulation. Mix 50/50 with distilled water. Never mix types. Total capacity is ~12.0 L (12.7 qt). Flush every 5 years or 60,000 miles.

A service refill (pan drop + filter) takes about 5.0 L (5.3 qt). A full overhaul is approximately 8.5 L (9.0 qt). Use fluid meeting MB 236.12 or 236.14. Always check level at operating temperature with the engine running in park.

DOT 4 brake fluid meeting MB specification 331.0. Replace every 2 years regardless of mileage, as brake fluid absorbs moisture over time which lowers its boiling point and can cause brake fade under heavy use.
